Tara Scheyer has been voted “Best Female Singer in Augusta” by Augusta Magazine for the past eight years, “Best Birthday Party Entertainer” and “Best Piano Teacher” by Augusta Family Magazine, and in 2013 was nominated for a Grammy in Music Education. Her family music project, Tara Scheyer & the Mud Puppy Band, has released four CD’s including “HiFi Felix vol 3: Felix Navidad” for The 12 Bands of Christmas, a foundation to fight pediatric cancer. She has performed with her family band- husband Kevin (drums/percussion), son Felix (age 10, harmonica/ukulele) and son Nopa (age 5, general racket)- at libraries, schools and festivals in Georgia, South Carolina, and Mississippi since 2005.
Tara graduated with a BA in Piano Performance & Music Industry/Education from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a Summer Performance Program degree from Berklee College of Music. She has worked as a piano accompanist for opera, ballet, and church organizations in Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, and New York. She began teaching music classes and piano lessons in 1988 and is currently on faculty as a piano teacher for Georgia Regent’s University Conservatory Program, and general music teacher at Episcopal Day School and Trinity on the Hill Preschool. Her private studio also offers Ukulele ensemble classes and Silly Monkey/Baby Bear Music classes for infants- age four.
Tara began taking her songwriting hobby seriously when she was in college in 1992. She spent 8 years touring with her bands Watermelon Sugar and Snapdragon throughout the Southeast, and was eventually offered a recording contract with indie label Clutch Artery Records and later, Pound Records. She has released two full-length records, two singles and two videos with Snapdragon, and has released four solo albums including one live recording of a performance at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, GA, and one live recording of a performance at Augusta’s Fox Lair with her acoustic band, Half-shirt Leroy’s.
Highlights of her songwriting career include working at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, working as a staff writer for Reba McEntire, and getting to play and record with some of her favorite musicians including producer/guitarist Kenny Greenberg, bass player Michael Rhodes, and drummer Chad Cromwell.
Tara and Kevin Scheyer met in 1996 when her band, Snapdragon, and his band, The Soul Mites, played a festival together in Columbia, SC. They married a few years later and set up shop in Nashville, TN, where they spent 5 years working with music and kids. After coming back home to Augusta, GA, in 2002, they decided to make music and kids of their own. Their son Felix was born in the summer of 2004 and the idea of HiFiFelix was born in the summer of 2005. Tara had temporarily traded in her rock-star boots for sensible mommy shoes, and Kevin had taken a full-time teaching position at Richmond Academy. Although they still dabbled in their old music scene occasionally, they found they spent much more time, and got much more enjoyment from, playing songs that Felix could sing and dance along to. So they threw their hats into the increasingly popular realm of Family Music: kid songs that the whole family can enjoy. The first CD, HiFiFelix volume 1, was released November, 2006. HiFi Felix volume 2 was released in February, 2009, followed shortly by the arrival of second son, Nopa, in the summer of 2009. HiFi Felix vol 3: Felix Navidad is a collection of holiday songs, with proceeds going to The 12 Bands of Christmas Foundation, and the newest release, HiFi Felix volume 4 was released at Tara’s 5th Annual New Year’s Eve Concert/Countdown to Noon on Dec 31, 2013.

Then one became two... and two became four:
I met my most awesome drummer (and husband), Kevin Scheyer, when I finished college and moved to Georgia. His band, Soulmites, played the same clubs as my band, Snapdragon. One night at a show in Columbia, SC, I tried to set him up with my beautiful backup singer who told me he just talked about me all night. Hmmm… We ended up moving to Nasvhille where we got married and played lots of music together, and now we’re back in Augusta with our best collaboration: sons Felix (10) & Nopa (5). We occasionally take our little family band on the road down to Mississippi, and up to North Carolina, but mostly hang out around Augusta, GA, playing all kinds of schools, festivals and kid events, and pretty much having way too much fun.
