My #1 recommendation is the Makala beginner series by Kala. These ukuleles are a very high-end beginner instrument.
They have a beautiful sound and are very sturdy, great for little hands as they are learning. They come in lots of fun colors and the bridge is shaped like a dolphin or a shark.
